Strangely enough, they actually do have a shot. In this league, where defense is strongly discouraged by all sorts of rules, it's best to have your resources and strengths on the offensive side of the ball. Few teams can claim a better offense than Dallas right now, perhaps no one. The key is fielding a representative defense. Not great, just top 20 or so. Hold teams below 30 and outscore them.

Paul,

I'm on board w/ Jakar Hamilton and read the report about Gardner 's shoulder and that he will probably be lost for the season. Shame.

It's still early and after only 1 preseason game, so there is a lot of future tape on these kids to be analyzed. I am looking forward to seeing this unfold.

Good catch on the suspended CB roster spot. I can't believe I missed that. I actually wrote most of this before the Chargers game. Had I written it afterwards there is no way I would even consider Caleb Hanie but I would be forced to consider Dustin Vaughn.

Also, I don't care for Tyler Clutts either. But I think they will keep a FB but I think that FB is currently on another teams roster.

And it sounds like Gardner is going to be put on IR at the cut to 75 according to reports I just read a few moments ago. So that will answer that question.

The 3 cuts I had the hardest time with were Ceasar Rayford, Uche Nwaneri, and Chris Boyd. Can't keep them all.

I could have easily made a case for keeping Nwaneri over Parnell or Weems. And I'm also a fan of what Patrick has done thus far as well as Wetzel.

@KOWBOYKRAZY You're right about the roster spot at CB. Suspended players fall into their own category during active suspension, so he won't count against the roster until after week 4. Nice catch.

Paul,

You may want to check on the Scandrick slot, because I believe suspended players do not count against the 53. If I am correct, you have an extra slot for 4 weeks.

I want to disagree w/ you about Gardner, but the guy can't get on the field. I hope he makes it to the PS.

I don't think Hanie has any shot. We may need to put Dustin Vaughan on the 53 if he keeps playing as he did vs SD. Raw, but potential is there. 5000+ yds & 50+ TDs his senior yr!

I like WRS Newsome, Boyd, Byrd & Briscoe and fear we may be in danger of losing 1 or all of them if we waive them. Mucho talent at WR.

I have read all the talk about committing to the run, but Tyler Clutts has shown me nothing to warrant a spot. JC Copeland seems talented but uninspired. I think he was in on 2 plays vs SD.

They may decide to keep Vaughan, Nwaneri, Patrick, or Wetzel instead of using a spot for FB.

This is a 53 I can almost entirely agree with. Dixon or Webb but with Scandrick's suspension they'll have 4 weeks to show what they've got. Not sure if they can find a spot for a 3rd QB. I like Williams but think they go Randle unless Williams shows up in ore season. Lots of projections with Rayford and Boatright. I'm more on the side of Bass and Bush but those last two spots are antibodies on the DL

You very well could be right about them carrying more than 8 DB's, but with Spencer and Lawrence both starting the season on the PUP, they will have to go light somewhere to save room and still maintain a competitive edge upfront while those two get game-ready.

Weeden spot is not under pressure yet. The question I have at this point is rather or not they keep putting Vaughan out there or if they want to try and sneak him to the practice squad. If they are going the sneaky route, I doubt he get's too much more time behind center in preseason. I don't see them keeping 3 QB's, though, I truly hope I'm wrong. I really liked what we saw of him this past Thursday. He is my new pet cat.

I can't see them going light on the offensive line for the simple fact that they are likely basing their belief in success this year on what the offense is able to accomplish and it all start with that offensive line. But if you are right and they do go light, Weems would be my vote today as the odd-man out.

There is no chance they only carry 8 DBs. Heath is the ST leader and will get a spot. I'd be surprised if they carry 7 LBs and if they do I don't see Lemon getting that last spot. They will probably go short at OL. I'd carry 8. Also Weedens spot is not under pressure. If they want Vaughan so badly they don't want to risk him on PS then they find a spot in 53.

Waiting for Spencer (and a pass rush) until week 6 might doom the season before it even starts. Better to have him and Lawrence in the chamber ready to go so they can be used as soon as possible. Spencer is said to be coming along nicely, and as soon as he's ready to be even a situational player they need him desperately. There's no one else worthy of a roster spot anyway to take their place. Wilber can play DE in pass rush situations in the meantime.
I never would go light on the offensive line. It'd be nice to have depth across the offense in total, because it might take 50 points a game to go 8-8 this year anyway.

Spencer still isn't even practicing, so having him ready for Week 1 is highly unlikely. To go further, with Lawrence's injury, Dallas really can't afford someone else (Spencer) that isn't playing to take up a roster spot at the same position. Lawrence isn't eligible for PUP because he has practiced, otherwise that would be the way to go with him. Leaving Spencer on the PUP list keeps him out until Week 6 and then he wouldn't take up one of the 53 roster spots.

As for Nwaneri, we will see. I think Dallas has enough flexibility with Weems (T/G), Bernadeau (G/C), Martin (G/C/T) that they could afford to go light on the OLine if they felt they needed a roster spot somewhere else, and if they go light I think Nwaneri is the odd man out.

Yeah, he's coming along a lot better then I thought he would. Not sure if he could ever reach the play everyone had for Claiborne. I don't think Mo can reach it, that's only because everyone thought he was coming out as a Hall of Fame shutdown corner.

The kid is the fastest and most athletic db Dallas has. Bad rookie season, but he's coming along. Potentially I think he could be what everyone envisioned Claiborne was.

I think Brandon Weedin will be a pleasant surprise to all of you nay sayers. He has beaten most of the "Great QBs" that came out the same year he did. Both RG III and Ryan Tannehill twice and Andrew Luck, not too shabby. All of you gloomy gus fair weather fans really know how to build confidence in a player. The Cowboys must have had a reason in picking him up.

I'm not worried about our offense once Tony, Dez, and Murray take the field, but our defense is going to suck big time once again...maybe worse than last year. Every game is going to be a shootout so at least it will be exciting. I was impressed with Weeden and Vaughn, but disappointed in the 2nd tier OL.
